Super excited about my first gate 1 trip! My wife and 2 children (aged 15 and 13) will be doing the 12 day classic south african trip in September of 2017. The trip is still a long way off but I'm always looking for advice or tips to make the trip easier, more enjoyable and to alleviate any issues that may arise. Any advice anyone has about anything at all is greatly appreciated. Restaurants and shopping recommendations? What to pack? Things to watch out for etc.

Thanks for any help!!

Prepare for any weather, with layered clothing. We went the other direction last fall (Johannesburg to Cape Town) and it did rain a few days, although it didn't affect us too much.
If you have a good camera, bring it. We saw SO many animals at that time of year-- the game drives were fabulous, both in Kruger and at Hluhluwe.
Watch the movie or read the book "The Long Road to Freedom" so that you have some info about Nelson Mandela-- he is incredibly revered throughout South Africa.
The home hosted dinner in Cape Town gave us some very interesting perspective on the country. I see you also have the option to go to townships in the area-- I would absolutely do that. It will open your children's eyes. We are from CA, so not that fascinated by the winelands, but our daughter (age 30) did the shark cage diving last year and thought it was great!
Happy to answer any questions you have. It should be a wonderful family trip!

We went on the 16 day SA tour three years ago and had such a wonderful time that we went again a year ago, taking our two oldest grandchildren (11 and 13). They are still talking about it! I strongly advise taking the extended trip to Botswana and the Chobe Game Reserve...as that is by far the best part of the trip. Chobe has a fantastic array of animals and you get up close and personal with them. We have traveled the world and this was the best trip of all we have taken.
