Hi,

Planning to take 10/11 day Russian River Cruise from Gate 1 in May 2017. Just hesitating about the condition of the ship and overall tour experience. Any feedback from recent travellers on the condition/comfort of the ship and how well the tours are organized (day tours etc). Assume it may not compare to European River cruises, but is it at least as good as Yangze River Cruise?

Thanks in advance for your time.

Paul

My recent trips:

1) 10-day Affordable Peru with Gate 1

2) 14-day China including Yangze River Cruise

Paul, I did the Russian River Cruise last year, from St. Petersburg to Moscow. Except for one thing it was amazing and up to Gate 1's usual excellent standards. That one thing was a subcontractor tour guide that gave us the tour of the Summer Palace in St. Petersburg. I have taken a lot of tours with Gate 1 and all I can say is someone must not have checked him out before they hired him for us. He mostly wanted to talk about himself; he didn't have us use whisperers, so I heard very little of what he had to say while we were touring inside. And he was almost an hour late getting to the meeting place he told us all to be at for going back to the bus, with not even an apology to everyone he kept waiting. Enough said about him. Fortunately we only had him for the one day, and we were all VERY happy to find out we would be turned over to a tour director on the ship for the rest of the tour. The cruise was interesting, relaxing, and wonderful. Enjoyed all the stops, and enjoyed seeing what it was like to go thru a Lock with the ship. Loved seeing the Kremlin (not what I expected!) and the subway hopping at nighttime in Moscow to see the beautiful artwork was amazing. Make sure you don't miss that!

I did the river cruise over Labor day 2016. Many of the stops between Moscow and St. Petersburg are rather short, only 2 hrs long. After the set tour you only had a 1/2hr or so to shop before needing to be back on the boat. We did have "whispers" so you could walk a bit away for photos and did not have to always stay packed in with the group. There were always toilets available and in reasonable condition. The ship has been refurbished so it looked nicer than many of the other boats we walked through (they dock side by side any you may walk across 2 other boats to get to the dock). But it is not at the same level as a caribbean cruise ship. Temperature on the ship was usually comfortable. Bring rain grea and windbreaker at a minimum, layer for tours. They get very few truly sunny days a year. And the wind on the boat deck is really cold. Some folks dressed nicer for dinner, but most of us wore what we had on for the day. Temperature in the dining room tended to be a bit warmer.
