First, let me say that the Gate 1 12 day classic Vietnam trip was wonderful. Very well done and quite the experience. Gate 1 knows how to run a tour. I hesitate to voice a negative when the trip was overall very positive, but I feel that future travelers need to be fully informed. During a February trip to Vietnam, our tour bus stopped in Da Nang at Xuat Anh Fine Art and Stone Sculpture. We were encouraged to view and perhaps purchase the merchandise. My wife and I actually liked a large garden sized stone lantern and purchased it (at an inflated price - but that's ok, it's a souvenir and from Vietnam). The sales staff told us that the price included shipping - I asked SPECIFICALLY if it would include shipping to Columbus, Ohio (our home) as I didn't want to arrange to pick it up or have it shipped from Los Angeles. I was told, yes, that it would include shipping to Columbus. Then in May, I am contacted by the agent in the US (CSLL Logistics) that I must pay them $400 for handling the shipment in the US, and another $275 for them to arrange clearance through customs if I did not arrange to do this myself. I was surprised, to put it politely. I expected some expense to clear customs in addition to the shipping that I thought I had already paid for with my purchase, but this was very unexpected. Had I been informed honestly at the point of purchase that I would have to pay over a third of the price of the item in ADDITION to what I'd already paid, I likely wouldn't have made the purchase. I have a suspicion that was the plan at the merchant's shop all along. I informed Interlink DaNang (the Vietnam based shipping company for the merchant) and was told that the shipping was just trans-Pacific and that the additional expenses are routine. Very disappointing and in my opinion, very misleading. Buyer beware - even if you ask the correct questions. Steer clear of this shop, or if your tour bus stops here for bathroom breaks, just don't open your wallet.
