Please excuse if this question sounds pathetic, but I've previously been told not to wear open sandals on the daytime walking tours. So, what about at night? It's going to be hot, hot, hot there next week, but I really don't like filthy feet!

Just wear tennis shoes what the heck? I only take 2 pairs of shoes, sandals and hiking shoes. It just has to work...

Ah yes - vanity thy name is... Actually, after wearing the big athletic shoes all day, I like to try to look a little nicer sometimes at night - nothing fancy, just not as klutzy as I do when touring.

Believe it or not I brought a pair of sparkly gold Teva Sandals that were open toe and had a low wedge. I wore these at night with no problems. For days I alternated between tennis shoes and a pair of closed toe Jambu brand sandals.

Nice sandals for evening don't take much space and it was nice to not feel grungy on the nights we had special dinners.

The original advise not to wear sandals may have originated with me some years ago. Funny but true story - in Varanasi on our first G1 India tour, one of our tour members wearing sandals stepped into deep, fresh cow patty covering his foot and sandal inside and out. Fortunately we were walking back to the hotel where he used a garden hose and a good bath. You just don't forget that!
