Hi all,

My husband & I will be going on the 10 Day Affordable Peru trip later this month (October 30 /Friday departure), and had a few questions before we go:

Do any of the hotels have hot tubs? Or swimming pools? (We are staying at the Friday departure hotels)

What is included in the box lunches? I have seen many posts on the forum that the boxed meals are not great, so I'm just curious what is included in them. We will take the advice of others and bring snacks.

Are there any absolute must see things in Lima, Cusco, or Puno? (Restaurant recommendations welcome also!) We are not planning to do the optional tours in either city, but want to be sure we don't miss anything of particular interest. We are both fluent in Spanish and will have no trouble communicating with the locals about where we would like to go.

Thank you all for your advice / input! We are looking forward to our trip.

We were on this tour last month, but did not stay at any of the same hotels, so I can't help you with those questions.
In Lima, we were originally going to skip the optional Larco Herrera museum, but changed our mind after trying to figure out the logistics of doing it on our own. We really enjoyed it, and having a guide to explain what we were seeing was very helpful. Well worth it, in my opinion. We went to the Larcomar mall along the Pacific Ocean for dinner on our own. Beautiful views, lots of choices for restaurants. We ate at Mangos, which was good, but others were also happy at other restaurants in the same area.
The Moras and Moray tour from the Sacred Valley were very interesting as well. They were my husband's favorites, and there was not much else to do in the area if you didn't go.
In Cuzco, other tour members seemed to really enjoy the market and cemetery activities, but we shopped and explored the city on our own during the morning. We did join the afternoon downtown tour, along with Sacsahuayman. Again, having the guide made it very worthwhile.
We did not do either of the optional dinner activities, and didn't feel that we missed a lot.
We were pretty tired by the end (we had also spent 8 days in Ecuador before Peru), so we skipped the Silustani tombs and took it easy in Puno. We had a fabulous, and very cheap, dinner at Oscar's. We sat in the back of the restaurant with the locals and enjoyed roasted chicken, with some ice cream at a street stand afterwards. The cathedral and square were really beautiful all lit up at night.
You will have a wonderful time! Drink lots of water, drink coca tea, and be sure to use bug spray at Machu Picchu. It wasn't the mosquitos that got to me, but some other tiny biting bugs. The red bites and itching were intense for a few days. I brought along altitude meds, but did not need them. If you suffer from motion sickness, either ride in the very front of the bus, or bring meds. One day we were on the road for 9 hours-- very interesting scenery, but a long time on the road!

I posted some things we did on a previous post just a couple postings before  your post.  One thing I did not mention was one evening we took a cab to the Magic Water Circuit in Lima.  Google it or watch it on youtube.  It was enjoyable and quite beautiful.  Boxed lunches included things like a chicken leg (undercooked) on a bed of couscous, banana, wrapped grain type of bar, some sort of dessert - cookie or something, maybe a mystery sandwich with a strange sauce instead of the chicken leg.  I know less than half the lunches were eaten by our group.  Some of the many dogs benefited by them.  When in Puno, the group goes to the floating islands.  This is an included tour and is fantastic.

Oh, I forgot to mention the box lunch. There was some type of sandwich, which wasn't particularly appetizing.  There was a box of peach nectar, a bag of oat cookies, a couple of tangerines, and a small bar of chocolate. I don't typically eat much lunch and the breakfasts were great, so the fruit and cookies were fine for me. I always travel with protein bars or granola bars just in case. Just make note of which days it is included, and eat extra- well at breakfast!

We often recommend Astrid 'a Gaston restaurant in Lima in the Miraflores section, near the hotels.  This restaurant is rated in the top 20 in the world, and is highest rated restaurant in South America.  Amazing food, and cost on par with an Outback Steakhouse if you do NOT do the tasting menu, which takes hours anyway.  Just do the a la carte menu.

farnhamadventures I hope you have a fabulous time in Peru.

I don't have advice to give as I go on November 19.  Please consider sharing your experiences upon your return.  Also, any info you can provide on climate and how many layers/sweaters/coats were necessary.  I will be packing soon and could use your help!

Have a blast!

I don't mean to alarm you, but a friend of mine is in Cusco right now with another tour group, and demonstrations have closed many of the tourist sites. I believe she is scheduled to go to Machu Picchu tomorrow, but it is looking doubtful as tourist transportation has been suspended for today and the strike is expected to last 48 hours.

Unless they plan to hike all the way from Cusco, it's not happening. Train and bus service to the Sacred Valley were suspended, so it looks like those already there don't have a way out, either. I haven't seen any updates yet today, though.

It is unclear if the strike has resulted in roads being blocked. There is a thread on the Cusco Tripadvisor forum, and it appears that all service for today IS affected. I can't imagine how long it will take to reschedule service for those who were bumped.

Yes, road blockage is possible problem.  Guides there told is strikers and protesters sometimes block roads, especially of they are farmers

Yes, it was the first stop on the trip. We spent about an hour there, and the library is full of old first editions-- amazing, but won't last forever. We did not tour the catacombs extensively, but did see some bones.

Although I have traveled extensively, I have never been on an organized tour so I don't know what to expect.
I booked my own airfare so I have free time before and after the tour in Lima and will be able to revisit the Monasterio de San Francisco and the Larco Herrara Museum on my own.

Going with a guide to both places is beneficial imo

How much time did you have at Machu Picchu? and did you feel it was enough time?  one day, I thought it was enough

Also was the flight to Cusco early?  How about the flight from Julica back to Lima? to Cusco early, flight back, you have to drive to the airport in Juliaca so it is later.  Juliaca is interesting....

I'm not travelling until April 2016 so I have lots of time to plan.

Thanks for any info or suggestions you might provide.  Altitude meds, mandatory

As Sharon said, flight times weren't too bad. Juliana is a drug haven, very strange town, but that explains why there is an airport there! And having a guide at the Larco Herrera made a huge difference.
We took a bus to Ollantantaybo, then a train to Aguas Calientes, then another bus to Machu Picchu. We arrived there about 9:30 or so, and stayed about 4 hours with most of the time being guided. We had another 45 minutes or so to explore on our own and take the bus back to Aguas Calientes. I felt we had enough time to see it, but would have loved the experience of doing at least part of the Inca Trail-- if only I was a bit younger and more fit. Be sure to use bug repellent, although it was a small "no-see-um" type bug that really got people's ankles and legs. Wear long pants, and spray your socks, too!
We brought altitude meds, but managed fine with LOTS of water and coca candy/tea. Lake Titicaca at then end of the trip has the highest elevation, but you will be better acclimated by then.
