Amazing
Just starting this thread to see if anyone else on this tour is on the forum
" Amazing China with Tibet" from 8/26/15 to 9/11/15.
Hi,
I am taking this Gate 1 tour, " Amazing China with Tibet" starting 8/26 to 9/11/15. I am looking for anyone else taking this tour. Does anyone know whether Tibet is open to foreigners at this time?  Any vegetarians on this tour? I am a vegetarian and I am concerned about the availability of veg.food in China? I have taken several other tours with
Gate 1 and i was always impressed with their service.
Pad.

I just returned from this long 17 days trip to China covering several cities ( Beijing, Xian, Chengdu. Guilin, Chimgqing
Yichang and Shanghai) We ( me and my wife) took the Yangtse River cruise and the Li River cruise. The trip was fantastic. Our tour manager was excellent. If you have any specific questions, I would be glad to respond, thanks

I saw the announcement in the world press that Tibet would be closed for tourism during the time you were supposed to be there.  That was on or about August 22nd, or about four days before your departure.

Did Gate 1 inform you before you departed about the cancellation of the Tibet portion of your tour? Did they offer to let you cancel your tour or reschedule for another date?  Did they wait until you were in China to break the bad news?  Guilin is fantastic, and I enjoyed my time there.  It is not a bad tradeoff for Tibet, but as you were, I would have been very disappointed.  We were in Tibet a couple of years ago and enjoyed it.

We did not go to Tibet. The news was announced only when we were in Beijing. We could not even enter "the forbidden city" no wonder that place has that name. Not seeing the "forbidden city" is something like going to Agra ( India) and not seeing the Taj Mahal. Just before the trip I saw the movie "The Last Emperor" as a prepartion and i was disappointed. Any way, all my fellow Gate 1 tourists had booked for this trip primarily because of Tibet and we were all
heavily disappointed. I realize this was beyond the control of Gate 1 , still we all felt that Gate1 should compensate us in some way. Low cost Guilin is not enough.
Thanks,

We are  scheduled to go to China and Tibet with  the Discovery portion of Gate 1.  We are suppose to
fly into Tibet  in October.
Does anyone know if  Tibet is open to tourism again.
Thanks for any info you can provide.

Francis, don't worry (too much) - Tibet is open for business and should be for your tour barring any unexpected political occurrences.  The closure earlier this month was announced on August 22 to run from Sept 3 through 12th.  This was not a normal shutdown, but was related as I understand to some sensitive anniversary dates relating to WWII and Tibet history.  Go figure.

Not well known is the fact that Tibet is closed to tourism every year from early February through late March.  This is one reason why Gate 1 tours to Tibet start in early April.

Keep in mind that booking for Tibet is never a sure thing.  Gate 1 and any other tour operator will tell you the same.  Gate 1 has the contingency plan in place to take you to Guilin if Tibet closes, which in theory can happen suddenly without warning.  This last closure came with a week or so warning.

If you have cancel for any reason insurance, monitor the open status of Tibet up until the departure date.  You could cancel and rebook for a later date if it closes before you depart the USA.
