I will be going a week before you on this tour (October 1). I am really looking forward to it!  It is my second Gate 1 trip with the first being Peru.  I signed up for optionally in Istanbul(palace), whirling dervishes, full day cappodocia.  I am undecided on the other optionals and would appreciate any input.  I have been to Ephesus so I plan to stay in Izmir that day.

11 Day Croatia and Slovenia Oct 2014

Hi there,
We are doing Ephesus and Ballooning. Not sure we want to do the full day Cappodocia.  My wife and I are a bit claustrophobic :) and didn't know if you went into the cave homes.

We like to explore also on our own.  We tend to get a bit lost in the cities.  As long a we feel safe we'll venture a few blocks off of the main blocks into the real city.   Its a great way to know the real city.

Of course, I won't want to be working in a cous cous factory for the rest of my life because I wasn't careful! ::pain::

The all day Cappadocia trip (which they time so you can do balloon and a quick turn time at the hotel to do the all day option) is really a highlight.  The prime viewing areas are not close to your hotel and the city you'll be staying near (still a little bit of a walk, but not much (1/3 to 1/2 mile to city center) doesn't have a lot to offer.  The tour takes you to some great overlooks, you tour (mostly on your own after a quick orientation) some of the early dwellings and churches.  Those caves are not too confining and you won't spend a lot of time in them.  There's a lot to see.  You'll do more walking/hiking at a third area and the there is a stop at a cite where the early Christians went below ground (an underground cave complex) that you can stay above ground (it is confining, small passageways that involve crawling and dark).  This tour for us was the highlight of entire tour (we had to skip the balloon ride as it was snowing the day we were there).

So again hope you consider it.

Thank you Gotta Travel! I think we'll lock that in right now!  Our organist at church lived in Turkey for a while and said the same thing, the open air museum was really something.  Crawling through a cave, probably not but the rest of it...I think sounds great!

Thanks again, Mike & Sherry
