Can anyone tell me if there are a certain number of pages that must be blank in your passport for entry? Frommers says 2 blanks pages. The state department's website shows 1 & another website shows 3.

I too found that various sources show various things.  Most documents reference that many countries require two.  I think this really refers to space for visas.  Many countries require two contiguous pages in the book to affix a visa, and use the page next to it to stamp the passport during entry and exit of the country.  Vietanm is a perfect example of this.

No country will put a Visa over an existing stamp, visa, or entry of any kind.  They will not use the endorsements pages or the last page either.

If you have nearly filled your passport and have years left on it, you will need to send it in to have more pages added.  This is what happened with our last passports.  About three years ago we sent them in, and the passport agency put the new pages in free.  Two weeks later, they announced they will now charge $82 per passport for that service!  Just missed having to pay $164!  If you are getting a new passport, you can get yours with extra pages when new instead of adding later, and this is still at no extra charge.  This is what we did when we renewed a couple of years ago.

We got our visa right on the ferry boat, took half a page, and the guide did it all.  $20 or so.
