Thanks for your all your helpful info.  I'm wondering if you went to the Mekong Train station?  I'm now wondering if we should incorporate that tour somehow.  Gate 1 is full of Temple tours and I'm thinking about seeing the Grand Palace, Dameon Saduk Floating market, tour of the Mekong Train Station  with Absolute Bangkok and a Thai cooking class  in the evening and call it a day.

Hi. It was great reading about your experience in Thailand. My 18 day tour is coming up Oct 4th.. Going to Bangkok three days before the tour starts because I don't like to get there night before any tours. This is my fourth tour with Gate1 and I am super excited. I am looking forward to the culture for sure and the food. Growing up in The Bahamas and now living in San Francisco has allowed me an openness and mind to differences and I am hype about my entire trip to Asia.  I'm definitely going to take advantage of all the advice from these forums. Anyone going on this trip... Looking forward to meeting you.
Anyone going on the 15 day  tour of Central Europe in Oct? Traveling alone but I am so excited to meet fellow travelers.

My sister and I are traveling with a tour thru Gate 1 to Thailand. We will be there in November 2015. I am so happy to read about your experience with the Thai coking class. We were hoping to add this to our itinerary and are pleased with your high praises of Chef LeeZ school. We opted out of many of the excursions that were being offered and plan to book the cooking class, a river market tour, possibly Wat Arun and a fancy dinner somewhere.
My sister and I just booked the 13 Day Classic Thailand, departing Nov 3rd. We are interested in hearing from other travelers that are booked on the same trip or have been on the same trip, ahead of our getting there. We are really excited to get there. We have opted out of some of the available excursions and hope to plan to replace them with things we prefer i.e. river market, thai cooking class, possibly Wat Arun etc. We are curious to hear from past travelers on the subject of which tours they felt were worthwhile. We will also be adding on the elephant ride, to our already booked excursion at the elephant camp.

2 months until we get there!!!!

Yes, Chef LeeZ school is very good, and fun.  You effectively make your own lunch there, so go hungry.

Please be aware that Wat Arun closed for renovation in July of this year, and will remain closed for the next three years.  I am pretty sure you can still go to the site and get fairly close to the stupa, but will not be able to climb it.  If I had the time, I would probably still go.  The grounds around it are nice.

We are going to take a cooking class as well but Chef Leez's classes are all too early.  Wondering if anyone has any experience with Silom cooking class.  Also wondering about exchanging some money prior to leaving , or should I just get to a bank in Bangkok?  Another question I had was would it be worth just taking a cab to the floating market as opposed to incorporating it in a paid tour?

It's the elephant camp they have as an optional on the G1 tour no we did not need reservations for Sky Bar, however, if you want to eat up there you do. I was told very expensive so I would enjoy the "free" bar experience but expect to pay high prices for drinks probably best to have wine or beer. If I recall the drinks not so strong. Although probably just as well it's pretty up there but a little scary - not really but sort of. You can actually look over the glass wall which if I recall is only chest or shoulder high. I can't remember like Randy lol!  You will have a wonderful time!!

I just wanted to say thanks for all of the helpful information on this thread. My husband and I just booked and we are so excited. I am your typical type A planner, so the information about which "optional" tours are worth it and which are not is helpful. Thanks again!
