I will let you know - I am doing ours tomorrow!   It looks pretty straightforward to me.  I think you are essentially ordering the visa, which will be affixed into your passport when you get there.  I like the idea of not mailing my passport anywhere I don't have to, but on the other hand I like to have it all done before I leave if possible.  It appears that India really wants travelers to do it this way, altough you may still be able to send it to the embassy here.  I am not sure about that however.  The last time we went to India, which was in 2008, they did not have eVisa and we had to mail the passports to the embassy.

When is your trip?

After starting the online eVisa process, I did not get very far until finding out you cannot apply for the visa any sooner than 34 days before you will be arriving in India.  I called Gate 1, who confirmed this and said it is still the best way to go.

Some of the info provided online and by email (after booking) by Gate 1 is a little convoluted on Indian Visas.  On one hand they say the only way to get a single entry tourist visa is online through eVisa, then they give you links to GenVisa and another site that imply they will do it for you.  If info is correct, GenVisa will charge a couple almost $400, while the online visa directly is less than $70 per person.  Sort of confusing.

I guess I will be waiting until 34 days before arrival to apply.

Thanks for the input!   We are 11/22/15 12 day Kaleidoscope of India.   I am a little nervous about waiting that close in time to apply for the Visa  but from what I read on GenVisa's site one must apply through the evisa site for a single entry visa regardless of whether you wish to use their service or not.   So I'm thinking why pay them the 379.00 plus if that is the case.   Really hoping someone who has gone through the process already will chime in with their experience.   Looking forward to this adventure!

We are heading out on Nov. 3, so will be able to do visa about three weeks before you can.  We are doing the 15 day trip with Ranthambore.  We did your tour in 2008, with Nepal added.  It is a really good one.

Looks like you really like Northern Ireland.  We were in Belfast last year, and really enjoyed the Titanic Experience.

So you must have really enjoyed India to be returning again.  I feel it will be fantastic!   We are drawn back to Northern Ireland as Van Morrison is from Belfast and we like to see hin perform live from time to time.   This upcoming trip is to help him celebrate turning 70 on the 31st of August.   He will be performing live on Cyprus Avenue.   Can't wait :)

We really enjoyed our first visit, but it is a bit of a love / hate relationship.  I have been told only 2% of visitors to India ever return.  We like to call that the "recidivism rate."  We never thought we would have any real desire to return, but in the last year or so was surprised by our desire to do just that.  We will see some old things and some new.  We get to do a game drive (may see tigers) at Ranthambore, and will see Mumbai, along with a couple of other cities (Jodhpur and Udaipur.)  Gate 1 does a really good job in India, and the hotels and food are all just great.  Another factor is the low prices of these tours.

You have to mentally prepare yourself for your visit.  First, there is the abject poverty.  You will see sights that are just so sad.  My wife is a retired social worker, and she was horrified at many of the sights, especially of the poor kids.  I had to convince her there was nothing we could do.  Second, there is the dirt, trash, grime, and garbage.  While all the monuments and tourist sites are really clean and tidy (and so are the hotels) most everything else is not.  You will find piles of trash burning in the middle of main streets in some cities.  We were amazed at that. In smaller towns, each shop would have two trash piles right in front of the store.  One would be trash and garbage, and the other broken building materials - bricks, boards, etc.  They were always separated!   Everything from trucks to donkeys go the wrong way of freeways.  Scary!  The people and their clothes, on the  other hand, are extremely clean, no matter what caste they come from.  Don't know how they manage it.  Third, you will be inundated by the world's most aggressive hawkers/vendors at every tourist site.  They won't leave you alone or take no for an answer.  I just ignore them.  After while, it is almost part of the fun.  The only thing I did not allow was any of them to touch or grab me or my wife.  If one touched my arm, for instance, I came down hard on the offender.

I'm going to   India and Nepal, so will need    2 entries into India.  According to the Visa instructions on the Gate 1 site  because of this I will not be able to do the  eVisa.   It is going to cost me more than the convenience of the eVisa and pick up at the  airport.

You are correct, and I was remiss by not saying that you cannot use eVisa for multiple entry visas.  You have no choice other than to send passport to embassy, have a visa service do it for you, or go to embassy yourself.

I don't like to mail passports either, but sometimes you have no other reasonable course of action.  We have done it several times, and so far no problems.  In this case it is probably best to send it to embassy yourself, cutting out the fee of the middle man visa service.

We are going to India and Nepal and also need multi-entry visa but what I read it is the only one you can get now.  Am I reading it wrong?  We are going in January so have a little time.  I am still reading we can do the e-visa???

Rosemary, I don't quite understand your comment about being the only visa available now.

Please see my comments in the post above yours.  Since you need a multiple entry visa, you CANNOT get it through the evisa program.  Evisa is only for single entry visas.  You will need to get your visas through a visa service, or send it to the representative of the Indian embassy.  The embassy now outsources their visa activities to a company called Cox & Kings.  Those are basically your two choices.  If you live close to a Cox and Kings location, they may let you carry the passport to them, and pick back up.  You cannot take to Indian embassy.

I had read this With effect from 15th April 2015, the single category of Tourist Visa available to be applied by a US national will be a 10 year, multiple entries Tourist Visa, with a fee of US$ 100 (exclusive of ICWF & CKGS service charges). The actual duration of the visa will be at the discretion of the Embassy / Consulate.

It made me think there weren't any one entry Visas any longer. but I assume you are saying you can still do the e-visa if you are only entering India once.  We will be going to Nepal so will have to use the services of ICWF & CKGS.
I assume we can still mail in the visa application with photo and check.

You are on the right track for getting your visas.  You should work with Cox and Kings.  I would think adding another layer of middle man with Gen Visa would just make the process take longer and cost more money.

The evisa is still available, but again it is a single entry type.  That program started only about one year ago.

I got my evisas a couple of weeks ago - we leave for India next week, and only needed single entry.  It was a real pain to get, as the web site does not always work well, and there are problems with getting credit card payments to process on the site.  If your care payment bombs out more than three times, you must reenter all of the form data again for the whole visa.  I had to repeat twice for one of our visas.   You cannot combine payments for multiple visas - each had to be paid for with a separate credit card payment.  For a country that is supposed to be the world go-to place for IT support, that site is fraught with problems.

The evisa is fast and easy. They (indian Government) answer very fast. Don't forget to print out the email of approval. They will ask for it at immigration.
Regretfully , the whole evisa thing is a big bummer once you get to the airport in India. There is a special line/queue for EVisa, and it can take hours (we only waited in line 2 hours) but after a 16+ hour flight one does not want to wait and wait and wait, only 3 inspectors and it took for ever... while people with regular visas just flew through with no issues.

Not exactly what I wanted to hear 7 days before our arrival.

What time of day did you arrive at the Delhi airport?  Were you able to use your Gate 1 transfer, assuming you booked one?  If not, did you use a taxi?  Cost?

Had we known we would have gotten the normal visa here in the states.

The prospect of waiting even a few minutes in any type of line after i get off an international flight compels me to always spend the money and get the visa before leaving home. I know sending passport off is scary but in decades of overseas living and travel, i have never had a problem.
Did you take this trip?  Was the ship the Mekong Navigator?  Did you enjoy cruise portion?  Would appreciate any other insights you can share.

Wanted to let everyone know that we used C&K visa services and I mailed our passports to them and they were back in one week with visas attached.  If you need a multiple entry Visa it was very easy and they are good for 10 years.  We are going on the Kaleidoscope of  India and Nepal on January 21st.
