I heard on the news last week that airlines in the United States are considering a proposed downsizing of carry-on luggage, and that some European airlines have already adopted the new smaller dimensions for carry-on luggage.  Does anyone know if this is already true of Lufthansa airlines?  Anyone experience any problems?

LuvToTravel, what happens if your carry-on is too large? Does it just get added to the checked in luggage and you get charged for an extra piece?

That is an almost impossible question to answer.  I am sure it depends on the situation, and the actual people involved.  Some gate agents and baggage handlers would just tag it and load in under the plane from the boarding ramp, while others (even from the same airport and airline) may charge you and make you jump through all the hoops.

Best policy to avoid extra cost and hassle is to be in compliance.

KSA:  google Lufthansa carry on baggage and it'll give the current policy and sizes and weight (differs by class you're flying).  If your carry exceed their specs, they will check it at the gate and charge you the check bag fee if it exceed your checked bag allowance.

In general, I welcome any change in downsizing carry-ons. It's pretty much gotten out of hand (and yep, I know it's because of the checked bag fees for domestic flights).  It continues to amaze me (and sometimes amuse me) at the stuff people try to cram into the overheads.  And while I can put my small back pack under the seat in front, I'm not going to do it as I want what little leg space I can get.

To me it never made sense to charge for bags to be checked; you are buying an airline ticket your bag should be included.  There should be a charge for luggage that is carried on!  A regular tote bag ok, but an actual small suitcase should have a charge.  And, yes, people are ridiculous with the amount of stuff they carry on the plane.
