My wife and I will soon be taking the London-Paris-Bruges-Amsterdam tour. We arrive in London on the morning of day 2, do a couple of city tours on day 3, and chunnel to Paris on day 4. It looks like maybe 2 half-day local tour guide tips, and two nights of hotel room tips. I generally use my credit card whenever possible. I'm trying to figure out how many pounds sterling we should bring with us.

I would think maybe 5 pounds each for the local guides, and around the same for the hotel tip. Then again, I've read that hotel cleaning staff in Europe doesn't expect tips, and restaurant tips are preferred in cash. Am I on the right track here, thinking that we won't need more than 20 pounds or so? Do we need extra coins for public toilets, like in Italy? Are there a lot of snack-type places or tourist sites that might not take credit cards?

You are probably try in to plan your trip to too fine a degree. To be comfortable and as flexible as possible, you are going to want more cash than that. I usually use ATM for cash. Changing money costs a bit more usually, and buying at home is the most expensive.

Any cash left over can be used for tips for manager and driver at end of tour. I like to squirrel those monies away first time at ATM to prevent scrambling for cash on last day. It is usually preferable to tio in local currencies.

Cool, thanks. So you think it's better to just bring my ATM card than to order currency from my bank at home ahead of time?

That is what we usually do. I ordered some Indonesian from bank as we were going to need taxi money at 2 am when we arrived. Might not find ATM in airport late. Most banks charge up to 7% for not popular currencies, a bit less for popular ones like Euros. If using ATM get at least $100 and preferably more to make flat fee ATM charges worth it.

What ever you do, make sure you always have some local cash for flexibility. Not everyone accepts credit cards. That is true even in our home city.

Yeah, there are a few cash-only restaurants around where I live, too. We ordered some cash through our bank and will have a debit card if we need more.
