I am looking for a hotel location within easy walking distance to the Grand Palace for a pickup for our afternoon private tour with Absolute Bangkok. There are hotels across form Wat Pho that look like an easy walk. Also looking at an afternoon tour of The Tiger Kingdom. Any suggestions will be appreciated

Thanks! I found a hotel within walking distance of the Grand Palace, if I can't get Gate1 to drop us off for our tour. Absolute Bangkok seems to be a very good tour company. Any other suggestions for our 13 day Classic tour. This is our first land tour as we are active cruisers.

We have done a couple of Thailand tours with Gate 1, one with Cambodia and Vietnam with BKK, and another same as your tour with River Kwai added to make it 15 days. Between the two tours, I have done all of the options available to you. I have also done a full day tour (prior to the River Kwai 15 day tour) with Absolute Bangkok, and can recommend them whole heartedly. They do a good job with a luxury van!

Absolutely opt for ALL of the optional tours. None are really very expensive, and each is worth more than charged. Some are better than others, but all are worthwhile.

The Hill Tribe tour was a little disappointing when we got there. I envisioned a tour of a "real" village. While these folks do live there, it at first presents as a souvenir sales gauntlett. After being there a while, we found these folks to be very friendly and engaging whether you bought anything or not, and they do some dancing for your group. These are extremely beautiful people, especially the younger girls, both inside and out. They are dressed in their native costumes with the neck hoops, and will gladly smile and pose for you to take even close-up portrait pictures. I got some of my best shots in Thailand here. In addition, you stop at a market on the way which was interesting, plus a beautiful waterfall with swimming beach in the woods. Wonderful homemade snacks available here! This is a local recreational hangout. I think the whole thing is about $22 - well worth it.

The Niramit show is a mixed bag, but again highly recommended. The show itself is a bit boring, as the actors don't speak, and the naration is in Thai. If you don't know Thai history you stay completely lost. Still enjoyable. There is a nice parade in the courtyard before the show, and you walk around a reconstruction of an ancient village, which we enjoyed. The buffet served to you there is wonderful. There are dozens of dishes to choose from, and everything I had was delicious. Probably the best meal of the tour.

An absolute don't miss is the massage at the hotel in Chang Mai. This is an option. The spa is very high-end and luxurious. You get a Gate 1 monogramed robe you keep. The full body Thai massage is superb, and done by cute Thai girls. There is mood music. Like a cruise ship but at a small fraction of the price. We did several leg and foot massages at various massage parlors you see on the street. Very relaxing after walking around all day. Maybe $5 for 1/2 hour. Get several!

Thanks! I have signed up for all activities except the massage. I thought we had an afternoon free to take the private tour, but the show will conflict in the tour. We have the whole day on the day we fly out so I may be able to schedule a tour that day if the transfer is late.
