We just booked the Jan 10, 2018 departure for this tour. Ordinarily, we are independent travelers, however, since this is our first visit to Asia, we decided to go with Gate 1 (our first experience with a group tour)

Is anyone else booked for this date?

This is a combined tour, first the Thai leg then the rest. Therefore you will have one set of companions for first part and another for the second, with maybe a handful doing it all like you. I have done both tours separately, and both are great. I especially liked the Cambodi/Vietnam part. It was our favorite to date of 17 Gate 1 tours.

Prepare for hot weather, even in Jan.

Glad to hear that you enjoyed the tours :-). We would welcome any tips you might have, both on the tour experience and the itinerary. Also, please share your thoughts on the optional tours being offered.

Regards,

Ken and Jamey

Ken and Jamey,

Not only is the tour you are going on Gate 1's longest, it may be their best. We have done all of this tour, but in two installments. We did 17 day Bangkok, Cambodia, and Vietnam and later the Thailand trip with River Kwai. You will be visiting Phenom Phen, which we did not do on our tours. We very much enjoyed both tours.

With regard to optional tours, I would absolutely do all of them. I have done all except the cyclo-ride, which was not available when we went. The hill tribe option is a bit contrived - kind of a souvenir stand with the tribe members in costume. You do not see much of their living situation unless you wander behind the main street a bit. You see a great waterfall on the way, where you can get homemade treats, which was really nice. The Siam Niramit show is in Thai, but not much is spoken anyway. If you are not up on Thai history (and we weren't) it is hard to follow. I was jet lagged and nodded off. On the plus side there is a recreated village on the site of the show, and it is interesting. You have time to go before the performance. You get a huge buffet meal with hundreds of selections, and it was actually probably the best meal we had in Thailand. Very good.

We went into BKK at least three days before our tour began - hotels are not expensive. We used the time to take a private tour with Absolute Bangkok and do some other things with City Discovery like rice boat tour and city bicycle tour. Absolute Bangkok does a great job and will take you to the sites you decide on. Gate 1 does NOT provide a comprehensive tour of Bangkok I am guessing because of the traffic. Out optinal tours provided a better look of the city. You can do a custom tour or a preplanned tour that they provide. I would suggest going to the floating market outside of the city. Pick up and drop off at your hotel.

Take a ponch type rain gear.

Do NOT miss the optional massage at your hotel in Chang Mai. It is great - very high end, and luxurious. You get to keep the Gate I embroidered robe too. If you are walking the streets in Thailand and see a massage parlor (there are many) go in and get a 1/2 hour foot and leg massage. Very relaxing after a full day of touring! They are cheap - maybe $5 or so. We did it at least twice.

We did not care for the food in Vietnam in general. Just personal taste. We had lots of ethnic foods in various restaurants - Indian, Italian, etc.

Everything is Vietnam is dirt cheap. I remember we had a 5 course Indian meal in a good place with beer for $8 total for 2! That was in 2010, so prices may have gone up a bit. Still it will be far less than you are used to.

Thanks so much for the additional information. We have signed-up for many, but not all, of the optional tours. I'm sure we will be kept busy and are looking forward to the trip.
