We are going on the 18-day S Africa tour in September. I read through the trip preparation section, and there is no mention of what we should bring with us for the game drives. Do they supply binoculars, or should we purchase our own? Any recommendations? Any tips from those of you who have been to this area before-- this is our first experience there. Thanks in advance!

Mary,

If you don't have compact binoculars, here is a suggestion:

Before going to India, anticipating our game drive in Ranthambore, I got a super compact pair of Carson (a USA company) 7 x 18 mm binoculars. They allowed a great view of a wild tiger about 100 yards away. They are 3 1/2" x 2 3/8" x 1 3/4" - less than the size of my palm. This model magnifies 7 x and weighs only 4.5 ounces. It easily fits into my front pants pocket. Cost was about $24. I like it very much. They also have models that are just a little larger that magnify 8 or 10 times, all under $50. The 8 x model weighs about 6 ounces and the larger 10x weighs about 9 ounces. All would slip into your pants pocket.

I have a very old 7x power set of binoculars that are very large and heavy - probably 5 pounds. The advantage of larger sets with huge lenses is the amount of light they let in. It is sure not enough to make me want to carry them around on a tour. You can hardly notice the difference in the image, especially on a sunny day.

These new super compact models can be bought online or certain retailers including Sears and Target. Amazon sells them too.

Highly recommended for your application. I am sure as Sharon noted that binoculars will not be provided by the tour guides.

Thanks for the detailed response, Randy. I will look into that brand. We have a large, heavy set but don't want to lug those around. At those prices I think we will buy two so we can both look!

yes bring your own. Go to Amazon, do a little research first and you can get a good pair inexpensively. I paid about $50-$60ish. I got Celestron I think 8x42 (or 10x42) I think they are 8.. will post back when I get home.

Don't get a cheap pair, mine cost $85 on Amazon, a compact pair with excellent vision. It doesnt help at all if you can't see anything.

We have ordered the 10x Carson binoculars that Randy recommended. I researched a few others (Celestron included, thanks calexander) but really liked the small size and good reviews of the Carsons.
Our daughter is currently on a G Adventures yolo trip to the Serengeti-- she will no doubt be quite envious of our binoculars, as she has only a very small, not very powerful set. I'm looking forward to hearing about her adventures, though!

You will like these fine Mary. Compact like mine but 10 power instead of 7. 25 mm lenses will let in plenty of light and still only 9 ounces. Mine are only 18 mm lenses and still let in plenty of light. Your lenses are 92% more area so 92% more light.

Definitly bring your own, the wildlife can stay at a distance, and so do the safari vehicles so not to scare.
And any camera you bring must have a decent zoom lens, your cell phone just wont cut it.

If youre using a telephoto lens on your camera you probably wont need to use binoculars that much, we were so close to the animals in Tanzania it was ridiculous.
